Tilicho Lake Trek
Overview
If you want a trek that gives you everything—mountains, adventure, high passes, and one of the highest lakes in the world—the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek is exactly that. It’s not just a trek, it’s a full Himalayan journey.
The adventure begins from Kathmandu with a long but scenic drive to Besisahar and then onward to Dharapani, where the trekking officially starts. From here, you follow the classic Annapurna Circuit trail, passing through beautiful villages like Chame, Pisang, and Manang. Along the way, you’ll walk through forests, riversides, and gradually enter a dry, high-altitude landscape that feels completely different from the lower hills.
A key highlight of this trek is the detour to Tilicho Lake (4,919m), one of the highest lakes in the world. Reaching Tilicho is not easy—it’s a bit challenging—but the reward is massive. Standing beside this icy blue lake surrounded by rugged mountains feels unreal.
After returning from Tilicho, the journey continues toward Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi, preparing you for the biggest challenge of the trek—crossing Thorong La Pass (5,416m). This is one of the highest trekking passes in the world, and crossing it is a true achievement. The views from the top are wide, wild, and unforgettable.
After the pass, you descend to Muktinath, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists. The landscape here changes again into a dry, desert-like terrain, giving you a completely different side of Nepal.
This trek is perfect for those who want a challenging but rewarding adventure. It combines the classic Annapurna Circuit experience with the extra thrill of Tilicho Lake, making it one of the most complete trekking packages in Nepal.
In simple terms: more challenge, more variety, and way more stories to tell.
Itinerary
Your adventure kicks off early with a long but scenic drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar. The road follows rivers, passes through terraced fields, and goes by small local villages—so even though it’s a long ride, you won’t get bored.
From Besisahar, the journey continues by jeep toward Dharapani. The road gets rougher, more adventurous, and honestly more fun. By the time you reach Dharapani, you’ll already feel like you’re deep in the mountains.
You’ll stay overnight in a lodge and get ready for your first real trekking day.
Overnight: Lodge in Dharapani
Today, the trekking begins properly. The trail follows the Marsyangdi River, taking you through forests, suspension bridges, and small settlements.
You’ll notice the landscape slowly changing as you gain altitude. Snow-capped peaks start showing up more clearly, and the air feels fresher.
By the time you reach Chame, the district headquarters of Manang, you’ll be welcomed by beautiful mountain views and a peaceful village atmosphere.
Overnight: Lodge in Chame
Today’s trail is one of the most scenic sections so far. You’ll walk through pine forests and narrow valleys, with massive rock faces and peaks rising above you.
As you approach Pisang, the valley opens up, giving you wider views of the Annapurna range. The contrast between green forests and dry mountain terrain becomes more noticeable.
Pisang is a beautiful village with traditional houses and amazing views, especially during sunset.
Overnight: Lodge in Pisang
Today you head toward Manang, one of the most important stops on the trek. You can choose a higher route for better views or a lower, easier trail.
Along the way, you’ll pass traditional villages, monasteries, and prayer flags fluttering in the wind. The landscape becomes drier and more open, almost like a high-altitude desert.
Manang is a bigger village with bakeries, cafes, and even WiFi in some places—so enjoy a bit of comfort before going higher.
Overnight: Lodge in Manang
No long trekking today, but don’t just sit all day. You’ll take a short hike around the area to help your body adjust to the altitude.
You can visit nearby viewpoints, monasteries, or simply explore the village. The views of Annapurna, Gangapurna, and other peaks are incredible from here.
This rest day is very important—it prepares you for the higher altitudes ahead.
Overnight: Lodge in Manang
Today, you leave the main Annapurna Circuit trail and head toward Tilicho Lake.
The trail becomes more rugged and remote. You’ll walk along narrow paths with landslide-prone sections, so careful walking is important.
As you gain altitude, vegetation disappears, and the environment becomes more raw and dramatic. By the time you reach Tilicho Base Camp, you’ll feel like you’re in a completely different world.
Overnight: Lodge at Tilicho Base Camp
This is one of the biggest highlight days. You start early and hike up to Tilicho Lake.
The climb is challenging, but once you reach the lake, it’s all worth it. The deep blue water surrounded by snowy peaks looks unreal. It’s quiet, peaceful, and feels far away from everything.
After spending some time there, you head back down to Base Camp and continue to Shree Kharka for the night.
Overnight: Lodge in Shree Kharka
Today, you rejoin the main Annapurna Circuit trail. The walk is steady and not too difficult, but the altitude makes it feel slower.
You’ll pass grazing areas with yaks and wide open landscapes. The views are big, raw, and less crowded.
By the time you reach Yak Kharka or Ledar, you’ll be well-prepared for the upcoming high pass.
Overnight: Lodge
Today is a preparation day for crossing the pass. The trail gradually climbs toward Thorong Phedi.
If you’re feeling strong, you can continue up to High Camp, which makes the next day slightly easier—but also colder and more exposed.
Take it easy, rest well, and hydrate—tomorrow is the toughest and most rewarding day.
Overnight: Lodge
This is the big day. You start very early (around 4–5 AM) to cross Thorong La Pass.
The climb is slow and steady due to the altitude, but reaching the top feels like a huge achievement. Prayer flags, mountain views, and that “I actually did it” feeling—it’s all there.
After enjoying the moment, you descend toward Muktinath. The downhill is long but easier on your breathing.
Muktinath is a sacred place, so you can also explore temples and the spiritual side of the region.
Overnight: Lodge in Muktinath
After days in the mountains, today you return to Pokhara. You can either take a jeep/bus or fly from Jomsom.
The drive passes through dry Mustang landscapes, deep valleys, and eventually back to green hills near Pokhara.
Once in Pokhara, enjoy a hot shower, good food, and maybe a cold drink—you’ve earned it.
